Copperas Cove Independent School District (CCISD) was one of 34 Summer Meals Program sponsors that pledged participation in the first-ever Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Summer Farm Fresh Challenge. The 2018 challenge encouraged Summer Meals Program sponsors in Texas to include local ingredients in their summer meals. To successfully meet the challenge requirements, sponsors also provided Farm Fresh activities such as nutrition education, gardening lessons or trips to farms.
CCISD kicked off the Summer Farm Fresh Challenge by hosting an event at Fairview/Miss Jewell Elementary School. Activities included a milk mustache-making station, watermelon rolling contests, and a tomato planting lesson. Lunch included locally sourced watermelon slices from Village Maria Farms and local tomato wedges from Warren Farms. The milk served was sourced from 11 dairy farms in Texas.
It was a triple win for everyone involved. The children enjoyed trying foods from Texas, the producers found an exciting market for their foods and CCISD gave families another reason to return for healthy summer meals.
The 2018 Summer Farm Fresh Challenge took place from June 11-22. For more information, please visit Squaremeals.org/FarmFreshChallengeSFSP
