" Copperas Cove ISD opened eight summer meals sites in 2017 enabling the staff to serve 6,145 breakfasts and 9,412 lunches in June.
This summer Copperas Cove Independent School District (CCISD) is serving summer meals at eight sites, five more than the district operated in 2013. That increase helped CCISD serve 6,145 breakfasts and 9,412 lunches in June. The average daily participation was 384 for breakfast and 588 for lunch.
“The sites are at various locations around town, so it is my hope that kids are in walking distance to at least one of the sites,” said CCISD Child Nutrition Director Melissa Bryan.
Bryan said she supports the increase in summer meals sites because of the need she know exists in the community.
“I see kids each school year who come to school and say they did not eat dinner the night before and they are inhaling their breakfast and lunch the next day,” Bryan said. “This has a big impact on you when you think about the kids that might not be eating, not only on the weekends, but during the long summer months.”
Bryan said the sites also offer enriching activities thanks to great support from her summer meals partners such as the following:
- CCISD School — A school offers the Reading Literacy Camp.
- ASYMCA (Armed Services YMCA) — After summer school ends, CCISD operates sites at local YMCAs where children can enjoy activities.
- Local Church — A local church contacted CCISD about summer meals and they opened as a site.
- Boys and Girls Club — One of the sites hosts a Boys and Girls Club that offers activities at the site. Bryan works to keep this site open for as long as possible during the summer.
She also attributes much of the success to the nutrition staff who choose to work during the summer as well as the superintendent and deputy superintendent. She said that without all the support, it would be harder to feed so many children. Her efforts were recognized in a newspaper article from the Killeen Daily Herald. Click here to read the article.
