Recall Notice: Bidart Bros. Granny Smith and Gala Apples

On Friday, January 9, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a recall notice for Bidart Bros. apples. The recall notice is provided here. This is a commercial recall and does not involve USDA Foods shipment of fresh apples. Additionally, this recall does not involve apples received through the Farm to School Program.

However, Brothers Produce, a prime vendor for the DoD Fresh Program (DoD), confirmed delivery of Bidart Bros. Granny Smith apples to Texas school districts between the months of August and September 2014. On January 9, the Department of Defense sent notifications to those schools. It has been confirmed that Gala apples from Bidart Bros. did not go to any DoD customers in Texas. Since September, Bidart Bros. apples have not been distributed through the DoD Fresh Program (either variety). For commercially procured sources, school districts should contact their local produce provider to determine if apples received are part of this recall notice.
