The Healthy Youth Project with our key partner the Dallas ISD at four of schools in the Model of Excellence cluster (one middle school and three high schools) addresses the importance of nutrition and access to fresh produce for the most vulnerable students in the public food system. The Farm to School Implementation Project has three areas of focus: (1) we will encourage increased consumption of fruits and vegetables by expanding and building upon our existing promotional activities, taste tests, distribution of fresh produce at schools and other activities which promote the benefits of locally grown products; (2) the Healthy Youth Project will expand experiential and agriculturally based learning opportunities through the expansion of school gardens on additional campuses; and (3) we will develop and implement integrated curriculum to reinforce food and nutrition-based learning throughout the school environment.

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market works with Galveston Independent School District (GISD) to increase hands-on agricultural experience and consumption of local foods for students through the operation of the afterschool Young Gardeners Program (YGP), facilitation of a Farm to School Advisory Team, and integration of local foods grown by YGP students/local producers into the cafeteria menus. The “Fueling Kids with Fresh Food: Expanding Galveston’s F2S Strategies'' project expands YGP operations and cafeteria integrations to more campuses/mealtimes, bolsters YGP curriculum with a food justice lens, builds student entrepreneurship via direct sales to the public, spotlights YGP gardens through a City and district-wide poster campaign, and supports the growth of the Advisory Team as a network of leaders from the school, community, public health and farming sectors whose collaboration enriches real-world understanding of nutrition, health and agriculture for students enrolled in YGP and beyond.

Growing the North Texas School Garden Network: Providing Opportunities for Connection, Support, and Collaboration among Urban Educators to Increase Student Access to Edible Gardens in Schools will create a hub for urban educators to collaborate and receive support for school gardening practice. A diverse team of passionate advocates, educators, district representatives, social and community support groups and industry professionals will increase gardening opportunities through hands-on professional development to encourage school garden educators to increase and deepen student access to locally grown healthy food. A series of 3 in-person workshops will be offered for up to 36 Dallas/Fort Worth educators. After the first workshop, 4 Title 1 elementary campuses will be chosen to receive direct support, onsite mentorship, lesson modeling and garden development. A robust online hub related to edible gardening practices will be developed and made available to area educators.
